Publisher's Summary:
The mysterious death of a Catholic priest has been met with suspicion by his brother, Thomas Knight - and the grave silence of church authorities. All Thomas knows is that his brother died in the Philippines, the last stop of an international trek researching the history of Christian symbols. But Thomas and curator Deborah Miller aren't alone in retracing the priest's perilous and labyrinthine path. Their every move is being shadowed by a fanatical cabal of agents who are desperate to hide the astronishing secret Thomas's brother stumbled upon - and willing to kill to keep it buried in shadows of history forever.
Critic Reviews:
"Not only is Hartley's novel well paced, with enough twists and turns to keep most thriller fans satisfied, he avoids the missteps of most attempts to cash in on the Da Vinci Code zeitgeist by focusing on the faithful rather than freewheeling conspiracies.... [T]his slam-bang title is a very fun, surprisingly satisfying read." (Publishers Weekly)
"Exactly the kind of archaeological thriller I love." (Douglas Preston)
Members Reviews:
Collapse of "Willing Suspension of Disbelief"
The plot could have been interesting being based on research into symbols. Even the personalities involved, ( including members of a secret society, a senator, a discredited school teacher, a few priests, a dishonest researcher, a good student and an ex wife) have potential interest. The geographic backgrounds are varied.
Not even my willing suspension of disbelief can see an unhealthy bloke take on and beat 4 trained assassins. This is not The Grey Man. OK, the potential of a crazy CIA Black Op's gone wrong, could have made for an interesting sub plot.
Good for a giggle on par with B grade movies of the 1940's, without the style.
Nick Sullivan's reading at times., fell into something akin to reading a shopping list aloud.
At one stage, the thug took on the Irish lilt of the good priest.
Only two stars.
Nice international religious thriller
Good story wrapped in religious history. What would happen if something was discovered that suddenly turned the religious world on it's ear?
