That did not go like you thought it would.

Maybe it was your plans for the weekend.
Or the holidays.
Or a new job.

It’s a turn of events you did not see coming.
A hand you didn’t see yourself being dealt.

That didn’t go as expected.
And you are left trying to make sense of what just happened.

In Luke 24:13-35, two disciples of Jesus are reeling from a turn of events.  All their hopes and dreams for what God would do, how God would come through, all of that had been pinned on Jesus.  And all those hopes, all those dreams came to a violent, horrific end when Jesus was nailed to a cross.

The past few days have been the worst days of their lives. Their spirits are crushed, their hearts are broken.   Their hope is gone.

So these disciples hit the road and start walking to a nearby village called Emmaus.  And Jesus meets them on the road.
