FCF: We often struggle applying our faith communally rather than simply personally.
Prop: Because our faith is communal, we must celebrate the Lord’s Table communally.
Scripture Intro:
[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to I Corinthians chapter 12. For about a year, the church leadership and I have been re-evaluating and exploring our understanding of The Lord’s Supper. Last October, we really began a deep study of what this ordinance of Christ actually means for the church and specifically – for CBC. To date, we have taught on our new perspective of the Lord’s Supper three times. Each time there was a particular emphasis or goal in the teaching. Each time we have honed our understanding a little more.
Today – I feel a little bit cheap in that most of what we are going to discuss is review. However, I feel it necessary to do so for a couple reasons. First, since we have not done these sermons in a series, we as frail humans, tend to forget what we have learned. Second, because so much information is being communicated so quickly, it is hard to actually learn anything when being blasted for 45 minutes with it and then not touching it again for a bit. In short, the reason we are going to do some review today is because I probably didn’t teach you this information the way I should have.
The upside is that in the drawn-out process of teaching this, I have had the time to understand it better and better. The downside is – I may be the only one that does.
