Have you ever looked in the mirror and focused on everything you don’t like about yourself?
I’ve been there.
After my accident, I struggled with negative thoughts, confidence, and accepting the changes in my life. I spent so much time thinking about what I’d lost that I stopped recognizing what I still had to offer.
In this episode of the One Day For Life Podcast, we’re exploring MANIFEST, Manifest Your Vision Through Belief, the fifth commitment of I.C.O.M.M.I.T.
I share my personal experiences, what I’ve learned about practicing gratitude toward myself, and the powerful story of Army Veteran Arthur Boorman, who began challenging what he believed was possible.
We also discuss why belief alone isn’t enough. Meaningful change requires action, support, and the willingness to keep learning.
Whether you’re a Veteran adjusting to life after service, a caregiver supporting someone you love, or someone struggling to recognize your own value, I hope this conversation encourages you to look at yourself differently.
Here’s my challenge for you this week:
The next time you look in the mirror, acknowledge one thing you appreciate about yourself.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You can have limitations and still have value.
And your story is still being written.

Have you ever been so busy that, by the end of the day, you’re exhausted, but you’re not sure you’ve actually moved forward?
I’ve been there.
We spend so much time handling responsibilities, meeting expectations, and taking care of everyone around us that we can lose sight of where we’re actually trying to go.
But here’s something I’ve learned: Just because we’re moving doesn’t mean we’re moving forward.
In Episode 6 of the One Day For Life Podcast, we’re talking about the fourth commitment of I.C.O.M.M.I.T.: MOVE. Move forward, not backward.
After my accident, I spent a lot of time wanting my old life back. I wanted my independence, my physical abilities, and my Army career. I wanted to return to the person I remembered being.
But eventually, I had to ask myself a difficult question: Was I trying to build a future, or was I spending all my energy trying to get my past back?
That question changed how I looked at my life.
In this episode, we’ll talk about finding direction when life doesn’t go according to plan, recognizing the difference between being busy and making progress, and understanding that changing direction doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
We’ll also explore something I believe is important: Movement gives us information.
You don’t always know whether an opportunity is right for you until you explore it. You don’t have to make every decision permanent, and you don’t have to have your entire future figured out before you begin.
Whether you’re a Veteran transitioning out of the military, a caregiver navigating new responsibilities, a military spouse rebuilding after another move, or someone simply trying to figure out what’s next, I hope this conversation gives you something meaningful to think about.
Here’s my question for you:
Are you moving toward the life you want to build, or are you simply staying busy with the life you have?
I’d love to hear your perspective. Share your thoughts in the comments. Your experience might be exactly what someone else needs to hear.

What if the problem isn’t that you need to try harder?
We’re often told to be more disciplined, stay motivated, push through, or want it more. But when the same problem keeps showing up, more effort may not be the answer. You may need a better system.
In Episode 5 of the One Day For Life Podcast, we move into the third commitment of I.C.O.M.M.I.T.: OVERCOME.
I share how recovering from a traumatic brain injury forced me to stop relying on memory and willpower and start building systems around the areas where I was struggling. Those systems did more than help me function. They gave me evidence that I could move forward, and that evidence helped rebuild my confidence.
We also work through real examples that Veterans, caregivers, military spouses, and families may recognize, including rebuilding structure after leaving the military, maintaining routines through a PCS, managing caregiver overwhelm, and creating healthier habits that are actually sustainable.
The idea I want you to remember is simple:
System → Action → Evidence → Confidence → Repeat
We also talk about faith and the difference between trusting God with the outcome and taking responsibility for the work that is ours to do.
Before you finish this episode, ask yourself:
What problem in my life am I repeatedly trying to solve with effort that might actually need a system?
You don’t need another speech telling you to try harder. Study what keeps breaking down, build something you can repeat, test it, learn from it, and adjust.

What does commitment look like when pushing harder isn’t the answer?
After getting sick and being forced to slow down, Army Veteran and One Day For Life founder Shawn Hogan was reminded of lessons from his own recovery after a life-changing accident and traumatic brain injury.
In this episode, Shawn explores the second commitment of the I COMMIT Framework: CHOOSE commitment over comfort.
Sometimes commitment means pushing forward. Sometimes it means asking for help. Sometimes it means taking the medicine, getting the rest, going to therapy, having the difficult conversation, or simply showing up again tomorrow.
Shawn also shares how his military experience shaped his understanding of commitment, why Veterans often search for the “next mission,” and how repetition and neuroplasticity became important parts of his TBI recovery.
For Veterans, caregivers, military families, and anyone navigating a difficult season, this episode is a reminder that meaningful progress doesn’t always look dramatic.
Small does not mean insignificant.
You don’t have to fix your whole life today. You just need the next honest commitment.
Today’s question: What are you committing to today?

What happens when the role that helped define you suddenly changes?
After attending the Military Influencer Conference in Tampa, I kept thinking about one topic that came up again and again: identity.
For Veterans, the uniform eventually comes off. For military spouses, years can be spent building life around service, moves, deployments, and family. For caregivers, so much energy can go toward taking care of someone else that eventually you may find yourself asking:
Where did I go in all of this?
In this episode of the One Day For Life Podcast, I share my own struggle with identity after my accident, including the years I spent comparing myself to the person I was before everything changed.
Eventually, I had to stop asking, “How do I get back to the old me?” and start asking a different question:
“Who am I now?”
That question connects directly to the first step of the I COMMIT Framework: IDENTIFY.
Before you decide where you are going, you have to be honest about where you are right now.
We talk about:
You do not have to figure out your entire life today.
Start here:
Right now I am...
Right now I feel...
Right now I need...
Right now I’m avoiding...
Right now I want to become...
You may not be going backward.
You may be becoming someone new.
One Day For Life.
I COMMIT to live today.
In this episode of the One Day For Life Podcast, Shawn Hogan breaks down the three core values behind One Day For Life: Clarity, Commitment, and Connection.
These are not just words for a website. They are practical principles that can help us navigate uncertainty, transition, stress, recovery, and everyday life.
In this episode, we talk about:
The message is simple:
Clarity tells you what matters.
Commitment gets you moving.
Connection helps you keep going.
And sometimes connection starts with you.
Take a few minutes today and ask yourself:
What do I need to get clear about?
What is one commitment I am willing to make?
Where do I need connection today?
You do not have to overhaul your entire life.
Start with one honest step.
One choice. One commitment. One day.
