One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 3. narrated by Isaac BirchallThe new man takes a look around at the inmates of the hospital. They are playing card games and smoking, and they whisper to each other. No one ever laughs though. The room is separated into 2 sections, Acutes, those treatable, and the Chronics, those considered too far gone to be one day released. They narrator goes to explain how some of the patients came in as Acutes and were then made Chronics by the treatments like Electro-Shock Therapy and lobotomies. The Aides make fun of the Chronics as they know that nothing can be done about it; the Chronics are too far gone to fight back. Chief Bromden goes to say that he has been on the ward longer than anyone but the head nurse and adds that he came in just after the 2nd World War. The New guy walks around the Ward, taking it all in. He makes the men feel uncomfortable and calls out asking who “The Bull Goose Loony” is. McMurphy asks to speak to the craziest person on the ward as he wants to straighten out who the leader is. Billy Bibbit announces that Harding is the leader as he is the leader of “Patient’s Council.” McMurphy then has a “Stand-off” with Harding, and McMurphy establishes himself as the Top Man on the ward. After this, McMurphy starts telling the men about his history of incarceration, and how he is a habitual gambler. McMurphy then goes around and shakes hands with every patient on the Ward. When he gets to Bromden, he starts to make jokes about the chief’s size, but everyone on the ward tells McMurphy that he is deaf and that he cannot speak either. The Big Nurse then calls over to McMurphy and says, though she is thankful that he is introducing himself on the ward, now is not the time, and that he needs to take his orders and have a shower.
