One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey Part 1 chapter 4, narrated by Isaac BirchallThe Big nurse is sitting behind her glass window and is filling a bunch of needles with chemicals. She is asked by one of the small nurses what she thinks about the New Inmate McMurphy. The Big Nurse replies that McMurphy is a manipulator, and that she doubts if McMurphy is intact insane, and says that he could just be looking for free Bed and Board. She reminisces about how previous troublemakers were dealt with, and the small nurse interrupts her by asking why someone would want to disrupt the peace. The Chief then goes on to describe the Nurse’s demeanour, she wants everything in perfect condition, and has tried her best to make everything inside the hospital perfect. But as she cannot be on the ward 24/7, she has also tried to change the outside world (what the chief calls « The Combine ») to be perfect too; a world of precision and perfection, where everyone who won’t obey her is in a hospital. The chief then goes onto explain how the Nurse created her staff. She forces everyone « decent » off of the ward until she could find a doctor who would let her be in charge of the ward. The Aides were brought in only to Hate, she found 3 men that run on hate, and hate only; they hate the nurse, the patients, everyone who isn’t an Aide, and they probably hate each other too. After a long while, the nurse and her aides became able to communicate only on hate, and the Aides act out her wishes without the Big Nurse having to open her mouth.The Chief then goes on to describe the patients. The long-term patients, and referred to as Chronics, and the newer admissions, usually inside by self-admission, are called Acutes.The Chief then describes the general schedule of each day. Breakfast, showers, shaving, medication, puzzles and cards and magazines.He then recounts the story of a Chronic who didn’t react well to taking pills that he didn’t know. He explains what happens to people who don’t comply and it’s very very grim.Then the « Public Relations » guy comes in and walks some nurses/residents and explains to them how much things have improved over the past few decades...
