The Talking Point

One Jubilee Report: A Blueprint for Tackling the Debt and Development Crises and Creating the Financial Foundations for a Sustainable People-Centered Global Economy

Listen Later

In this hour, we turn our attention to the global debt crisis—and how it’s choking development across the Global South. As public debt soars, more than 50 developing countries now spend over 10% of their tax revenue just servicing interest, leaving little room for investment in basic services like healthcare, education, transport, or energy access.

A new landmark report, The Jubilee Report: A Blueprint for Tackling the Debt and Development Crises, offers a bold plan to fix this. The report was authored by a Papal-appointed Jubilee Commission—a panel of over 30 distinguished economists and development experts convened by Pope Francis under the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and Columbia University’s Initiative for Policy Dialogue. It was chaired by Nobel Prize winner Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz.

With South Africa holding the G20 Presidency this year, these reforms have particular relevance—and urgency.
