Jim Rohn taught us that "We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret." The pain of regret would not be very nice. I believe that suffering can become tremendous and not lessen over time.  And although the initial effort required to bridge the gap of kindness is great, that action can become much less painful over time.
