Publisher's Summary:
In the weeks before hosting the 1976 Summer Olympics, the Montreal police are tightening security to prevent another catastrophe like the '72 games in Munich. But it isn't tight enough to stop nearly $3 million from being stolen in a bold daytime Brink's truck robbery.
As the high-profile heist continues to baffle the police, Constable Eddie Dougherty gets a chance to prove his worth as a detective when he's assigned to assist the suburban Longueuil force in investigating the deaths of two teenagers returning from a rock concert across the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Were they mugged and thrown from the bridge? Or was it a murder-suicide? With tensions running high in the city and his future career at stake, Dougherty faces the limits of the force and of his own policing and has to decide when to settle and when justice is the only thing that should be obeyed.

A sold series moves forward
Book Three of the Eddie Dougherty series, this time starting with the Brinks robbery and going through the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The tease of homicide has worn thin with Eddie and his personal life grows more important. McFetridge continues his move into Joe Wambaugh territory, writing less about cases than how the cases affect the cop. A nice look into the shifting responsibilities of a cop as cases come and go, told with all the style and wit one has come to expect from McFetridge.
Solid crimefighting, lots of action and more too!
When I chose this book, I was expecting a sort of punch-fest through Montreal with maybe some interesting side information next to a Dirty Harry style plot. Even with that, I was surprised at how fun this book was to read though. The reader follows Constable Eddie Dougherty around 1970âs Montreal as he chases, questions and assaults criminals in pursuit of various crimes. Dougherty navigates his career through the police as an Anglo in a French run department and is looking for a promotion. Meanwhile working out his relationship with his girlfriend while the famed 1976 Montreal Olympics change the city.
As someone with an interest in Montreal and history, I found the book really engaging on a few levels - there were the detective stories of Dougherty and information sprinkled throughout about Montreal and some of the major developments. It seems like McFetridge has a pretty strong interest in the city, even if heâs not exactly from there. There are tons of music references too, with more than a couple flying over my young head. In fact, the book starts off with a quote from The Band about saving your neck or your brother and while that didnât fit into the main character, Doughertyâs story, it was a nice motif throughout.
The characters were ok, I liked them all for the most part. They tended to be a little too on the nose for the time period; there was a divorced couple, and lots of stuff with Quebecâs potential separation that felt a little one dimensional. It didnât detract from the story though and I think it was appropriate for the genre. The ending felt a bit rushed (doesnât it always though?) and a bit deus ex machina but the rest of the book was so good that it didnât really matter.
After reading this one, I think Iâd like to read more of the Dougherty series.
