Have you ever heard people say the christian bible supports slavery? or that the slave traders manipulated our ancestors with the Bible?

I remember the first time I heard that slave traders used the Bible as a tool to maintain slavery and keep slaves submissive. I was livid, angry and bitter towards the God of the Bible.

I knew next to nothing about the nature of God and so, I was so bitter and angry on behalf of our ancestors.

Many times during evangelism, people have thrown this and similar statements at me, and for the longest time that used to be the end of evangelism for me (at least for that day) but not anymore. The Christian faith believes that God manifested himself as the man; Jesus Christ and was born of the Virgin Mary, lived for 33 years, then he died and resurrected on the third day for the justification of the sins of the world, to make us right with God and reunite us together with him forever.

A Bible version puts it this way “The word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood”

But wait, are you thinking what I’m thinking. how is it possible for Jesus to be both God and man at the same time?

Why did he have to die in the first place? When God was in the world as Jesus, then who was ruling in heaven then?

If I was given a thousand naira note each time I heard someone say, “we all serve the same God, it’s just our mode of worship that’s different”? I’ll probably be a millionaire now.

Similarities are not enough to conclude two things are same, what really matters the most is what makes the difference. If I was given a prescription to buy paracetamol at the pharmacy and the pharmacist decides to give me ibrufopen instead because well they are both white, that would be drug abuse wouldn’t it? There is a difference between paracetamol and Ibuprofen even if they are both white.

I said all that to say this, when it comes to the religions in the world, it’s not enough to say we all serve one God, what’s more important is to find out the differences between our professed beliefs.

In this episode, we answered the question “ Do We all serve the same God?” After listening to this episode, I hope the next time someone throws the cliche statement “we all serve the same God” at you, you’re able to rightly help the person see reasons that’s not the case.

“My truth, Your truth, our truth?” Where do we draw the line? According to the dictionary, truth is that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality. This presupposes the fact that truth cannot be subjective but objective. For truth to be truth, it cannot be influenced by personal feelings or emotions. The clamour for individual truth in our day is completely flawed and cannot be allowed to continue . If I indulge a lie, because that’s your opinion, that only makes me a liar and not accommodating.

One thing needed for falsehood to reign supreme is for men who know the truth to be quiet.

If you know the truth, you should be able to defend the truth you know.

What do you believe? Why do you believe what you believe? Do you know your why enough to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you? You would agree with me one thing, if really there’s such a concept as eternity, then you cannot afford to get it wrong. It’s going to be an awfully long time to be wrong.
