One Week, Three Dead: Guns, Violence and At-Risk Communities in A&B

The first to be shot dead was 32-year-old Alexis Mussington. It happened on a night in Grays Farm. Another man, 45-five-year-old Radradatt Ramlakhan, was also shot dead by stray bullets during the shooting. Later in the week 32-year-old Gibson Ricardo Christmas of Green Bay was shot dead. One week, three dead.

In this episode, we discuss crime and violence in Antigua and Barbuda. We ask why why some communities seem plagued by gun violence and gangs. Are there effective strategies to reduce these problems, and do we have the resources to see them through?

The host is Kieron Murdoch. The guests are:

  1. Dr. David Muhammed, a sociologist and activist based in Trinidad and Tobago. He holds a Sociology PhD, and a Double Major bachelor’s degree from the University of the West Indies in Sociology and Education. He is the author of Black Studies, published in 2015. Dr. Muhammad is the founder and director of both the Black Agenda Project Organization and the Kwame Ture Education Centre. He also operates the online radio station Black Agenda Project Radio. He is the Trinidad and Eastern Caribbean Representative of the Honorable Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. 
  2. Dr. Oswald Thomas, a professor, political consultant, coach, therapist and media commentator. His broad background is in education, psychotherapy, community organizing, youth work and social advocacy. He has worked as a special advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, as a constituency campaign chairman, as a local government adviser, commissioner of youth empowerment, and executive director of several human services and faith-based organizations. He is a psycho-therapist.
