ONTARIO VT MISHAPS RISE, BUT ELEVATORS STILL SAFER THAN CARS
According to the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA), which regulates elevators and escalators in the Canadian province of Ontario, people are 800 times more likely to be killed in a car than by using a vertical-transportation (VT) conveyance, but VT accidents are still on the rise in Ontario, which accounts for close to half of the elevators in Canada, the Humboldt Journal reports. Acknowledging that the majority of VT systems in residences and offices are safe, TSSA said six people have been killed and 1,225 injured in VT mishaps in the past six years, with the number of incidents doubling between 2011 and 2016. They are primarily related to leveling and door issues, and can be attributed to user behavior or poor maintenance.

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE’S TALLEST PLANNED IN AUSTRALIA
A 108-story mixed-use tower, which would be the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere, is part of the Imperial Square development planned in Southport, Australia, by Azzura Corp., The Urban Developer reports. Taller than the 103-story-tall Empire State Building in New York City, the structure would contain a university, 2,200 residential units, a 200-room hotel and student housing. It would be joined by 48- and 68-story towers atop a six-level podium in the city's central business district at Ferry Road and Meron Street. The architect is Kris Kowalski, who said the intent is to reinforce the Gold Coast as an internationally recognized tourism and education destination. Construction is expected to start later this year.
