David Roever patrolled a Vietnam river in 1969.  A suspicious area along the shore prompted him to pull the pin on a phosphorous grenade.  Before he could throw it, a sniper’s shot hit the grenade.  It exploded – burning his ear and face, destroying his right eye, and tearing a hole in his chest.
