Ophrah Winfrey was born in the rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi  January 29, 1954, and later raised in inner-city Milwaukee.

Oprah Winfrey was molested during her childhood and early teens and became pregnant at 14; her son was born premature and died. 

Oprah Winfrey was sent to a man, she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee. While still in high school, she landed her first job at a local radio station.

At age 19, she co-anchored for the local evening news. Winfrey's often emotional, informal delivery got her into the daytime talk show arena.

One of her early successes was boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to the first place.

In 1994, Oprah Winfrey entered into the National Women's Hall of Fame
In 2008, she launched the Oprah Winfrey Network.


In 2013, Oprah  Winfrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama and received honorary doctorate degrees from Duke and Harvard.
