Optics talk: What is a red dot sight, or a reflex red dot sight?

So red dot is more of a generalization. That's what I have come to find anyway. There are several types of red dot sights available on the market. Some common types include:

  1. Tube red dot sights: These red dots have a round tube shape and use a simple red dot reticle. They are often more affordable than other types of red dots and are easy to use.
  2. Open/exposed reflex red dot sights: These red dots have a wide, flat shape and use a simple red dot reticle. They are lightweight and have a low profile, making them a popular choice for handgun and shotgun use.
  3. Holographic red dot sights: These red dots use a holographic reticle that projects a dot or other reticle pattern onto the lens. They offer a more precise aiming point than other types of red dots and can be used for a wide range of firearms.
  4. Prism red dot sights: These red dots use a prism to project the reticle onto the lens. They offer a more precise aiming point than other types of red dots and are generally more compact and lightweight than holographic red dots.
  5. Laser red dot sights: These red dots use a laser to project a dot onto the target. They are generally more affordable than other types of red dots, but they can be less durable and have a limited range.
