The name "Death Valley" has an ominous origin rooted in the hardships faced by early pioneers. In the winter of 1849-1850, a group of gold seekers known as the "49ers" were trapped in the valley while attempting a shortcut to the California gold fields. Enduring extreme heat and harsh conditions, many of them perished.
