Publisher's Summary:
It's the summer of 1936, and writer Stefan Zweig is in crisis. His German publisher no longer wants him, his marriage is collapsing, and his home in Austria has been seized. He's been dreaming of Ostend, the Belgian beach town. So he journeys there with his new lover, Lotte Altmann, and reunites with his semiestranged fellow writer and close friend, Joseph Roth. For a moment they create a fragile paradise. But as Europe begins to crumble around them, the writers find themselves trapped on vacation, in exile, watching the world burn.
In Ostend, Volker Weidermann lyrically recounts the summer before the dark, when a group found themselves in limbo while Europe teetered on the edge of fascism and total war.
Members Reviews:
A tale of twilight.
An interesting piece of history mainly about two immensely talented individuals encountering each other in the face of the nazification of their beloved homeland. Into the picture comes others like Arthur Koestler and some famous writers and communist activists. You will read about self destruction on the part of one and adaptation by the other. A real life version of Ship of Fools.
A good addition to the history of pre-war German language literature
A good overview of the interactions of German language writers banned by the Nazi's during one of the final pre-wa years
One of the best books on being a writer that I've ever read
One of the best books on being a writer that I've ever read.
As well as the best book on what it means to witness awful history unfolding and being completely helpless.
The Zweig/Roth interdependence
This book is about the relationship between two of Germany's best pre-WW II writers and the way they related to each other. The Zweig/Roth dependency is well defined and treated.
