Other Names for Sin and Salvation - Part 4

References:

(1) The Word of God is God’s means of offering us the salvation found in Christ, and faith as the means of accepting that salvation. Faith appropriates the work Christ accomplished.

(2) Allow me to turn now to answer these questions: How can I guarantee my eternal destiny? How can I know FOR SURE that I am going to heaven?

(3) we need to embrace THIS SIMPLE TRUTH — not everyone who THINKS they are going to heaven will actually make it there. Jesus Himself said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the WILL of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not . . . .done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me’ you who PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS” (Matt. 7:21-23).

(4) What this says to me is that my religious activity may be motivated by my will and not God’s. If that is the case, God is not pleased and I am treading on dangerous ground.

(5) Peter and John were preaching in Solomon’s Portico in the Temple. In their sermon they mentioned that God had raised up His servant Jesus and said that God had sent Jesus to BLESS them, in turning them away from their iniquities. The priests, the captain of the guard of the Temple, and the Sadducees were GREATLY DISTURBED that Peter and John taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

(6) It is not surprising that the Sadducees were disturbed because their doctrines denied the resurrection of the dead (Matt. 22:23; Mark 12:18-27; Acts 23:8).

(7) I learned from gotquestions.org that socially, the Sadducees were more elitist and aristocratic than the Pharisees. Sadducees tended to be WEALTHY and to hold more POWERFUL POSITIONS. The chief priests and high priest were Sadducees, and they held the MAJORITY of seats in the Sanhedrin. The Pharisees were more representative of the COMMON WORKING PEOPLE and had the respect of the masses. The Sadducees’ locus of power was the TEMPLE in Jerusalem; the Pharisees controlled the SYNAGOGUES. The Sadducees were FRIENDLIER with Rome and more ACCOMMODATING to the Roman laws than the Pharisees were. The Pharisees often resisted Hellenization, but the Sadducees WELCOMED it.

(8) Peter made a profound statement that would shock our postmodern world: Peter declared, “Salvation is found in NO ONE ELSE, for there is NO OTHER NAME under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Now as then, Acts 4:12 is not politically correct. Today we will hear many say, “Everybody is going to heaven.”

(9) Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. NO ONE comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This declaration is not a doctrine invented by some human leader of the church, but Jesus is the one who affirmed that. And His authority makes it true.

(10) Jesus spoke of Himself as the only way to heaven in SEVERAL PLACES in the NT besides that in John 14:6. He said His words are LIFE (John 6:63). He promised that those who believe in Him will have ETERNAL LIFE (John 3:14-15).

(11) The gospel of John lists multiple occasions where Jesus used the words “I am” when people asked Him in effect: “Who do you think you are?”
