Sibling duo Karen and Robert Carpenter formed a band together in the late 60s at a time when hard rock groups and psychedelia was the norm. The Carpenters were easy listening and produced soft pop ballads. They initially struggled to acquire a recording contract and fan base. Their string of hit singles like "Close to You", "Superstars", and "Rain Days and Mondays" propelled them into stardom. Karen was the drummer and she would sing behind her massive Ludwig kit for most of their career until she got pushed out of her shell and sang to the adoring crowd. Her sweet angelic voice made her unforgettable. Unfortunately, unknown to most of the world, Karen was slowly dying as a result from her longstanding easting disorder that she kept hidden. An unhappy marriage coupled with this, and her struggles with fame, makes her story a sad one. Join me today as we discuss how the Carpenters rose to fame given the obstacles, and what led to Karen's untimely death.
