In many families, there is something precious that gets passed down from generation to generation. It can be a set of grandma's dishes, some coins that grandpa collected, an old shotgun or even a ring or some other item like these. When I was younger I used to joke about how my hand me down clothes were the only heirloom my family had.

But, regardless of all these things, it points to something that is very important that we are entrusted with and pass on to the next generation so they can have what was given to us.

In the Christian faith, our heirloom is simply defined as catechesis. It is simply the transmission of the faith from one generation unto the next. It is that thing that unites us with the past. It is the Tradition we share in common that allows us to know we have roots.
