Our Curious World

The Hollinwell Incident, 255 children mysteriously collapsed at a Jazzy band gala event held at the Hollinwell Showground, Kirkby in Ashfield in July 1980.
Mass hysteria? Poisoned? Was there a cover-up? 40+ years on, still holds hot debate and discussion over the true events. Our Curious World obtains the original government report. Seeking to learn why was the conclusion was so controversial? Regional MPs were not convinced and were seeking sort a deeper inquiry. Comments from those who claim their health was adversely affected and their continued ailments. The conversation and topic comes up every so often. This presentation seeks to keep the conversation grounded in reality.

I spoke with a number of people who gave commentary on their experiences of having been present on the day of the Hollinwell Incident in July 1980. Including Neil Lancashire, the regional media photographer. Whose photography of the chaos and confusion was captured on the day has endured. I spoke with Neil on the 12th January 2022.

Following correspondence with Ashfield District Council, was informed their copy of the official government report of Hollinwell Incident could be made available. A trip to Kirkby to Ashfield was able to collect the report. Using information found within the document and with the info of Bob Rickards notes and news clips which were presented in the Fortean Times article from Sept 2010. Mass Hysteria in Schools: A Worldwide History Since 1566 from Dr Robert Bartholomew and Bob Rickard. Further information from Reddit and ATS, revealed some lines of commentary, as does the BBC article from 2003, having a number of user comments.

“Already seen”, those who have experienced the feeling describe it as an overwhelming sense of familiarity. In September of 2013, Mark Birch, Sion-Marc Simpson and I gathered around a table with beers with a dictaphone running. Free-flowing conversation across many subjects and topics. Thoughts and ideas being batted around. The conversation arrived at the topic of Deja Vu.

Consider this a bonus audio-only conversation, you can listen below or download. Or via the Our Curious World PODCAST wherever you choose to listen.

Sharing a conversation with Rob Dawes and Brendan Scoular of the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society. Who operates the Sherwood Observatory. Our Curious World | Sherwood Observatory MSAS.

A great conversation with Rob and Brendan. Discussing the 50 year anniversary of the Observatory driven by the passion of committed members of the community with an interest in Astronomy, the science of the Cosmos. The signed off plans to expand and become a full-fledged Planetarium and science centre. The humbling experience of observing the Night Sky. Naked eye astronomy. We also go into Overdrive, discussing the significance of the Pale Blue Dot and the Earth Rise photographs. The Mars Helicopter and Voyager probes. We touch on The Thunderbolt Incident, which occurred a mere stone’s throw from the Observatory. All this and more.

This marks the second occasion, where Our Curious World has done a 3-way conversation. There’s always something isn’t there ^_^ Seems my master recording was only saving the conversation via Skype initially, rather than through Open Broadcast Software. Thankfully they matched up perfectly and a few minutes in, all is fine video-wise. Have added a number of additional clips, photographs and footage. I flipped the releases around for Megan Shores Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity as the festival was a week out from the beginning of the Festival. Though this show with the guys of the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society was recorded before.

In this show, I share a conversation with Thomas and Lasse of Hidden Denmark. Their team has forged together from different backgrounds and disciplines. Bringing to the table a variety of knowledge and experience. All with a dedicated passion for folklore, history, legends, and a taste for the unusual. We have been actively researching across the breadth of the country of Denmark. Producing accessible adventure audio tours.

Was a truly eye-opening conversation to the stories of Denmark, their journey coming together – we went into overdrive for another half hour beyond the bell and explored other fascinating events. Thomas, Lasse and myself have agreed to follow this up very soon, with another dedicated show to certain legends and stories.

This conversation was recorded using Skypes NDI external API function going into Open Broadcaster/OBS, to record the conversation as a 3-way conversation. Each video and audio line broadcast taken in separately. The audio is great, and though the sync is 100% with myself, appears there is slight delay to video for Thomas and Lasse.
