On October 28, Pastor Jim preaches on Hebrews 7:23-28.
Everyone needs a pastor. You do and so do I; a man or woman who hears the cries of our hearts and celebrates the joys of our lives.
Over the years I’ve had many pastors. Some were women and others were men. Some were ordained and others not.
As a pastor moving from church to church, I’ve learned some things. First of all, I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. Over the years there have been folks who simply chose not to experience my ministry. I know what you’re thinking: “How is that possible?” :-)
Ninety-nine percent have been gracious and kind, overlooking my faults and helping me grow as a pastor and person.
When I came to Oak Hill, I followed a number of other pastors who were named “John.” I toyed with changing my name to John because for the first year that’s what lots of folks called me.
The author of Hebrews addresses the fact that all priests, and we might say pastors, have a shelf life, saying, “...they were prevented by death from continuing in office.”
He or she (some think the author may have been Priscilla) speaks of a High Priest, who, unlike the rest of us, is “holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.”
He is the ultimate priest and pastor who will never leave us by death or for any other reason. Guess what his name is?
