If you think politics is a noble business you misunderstand the underbelly of corruption. Those who reach for power aren't truthful when they say they're working for the people. To be re-elected for 30 0r 40 years you have to be part of machine politics. Also described as patronage. You make promises to get elected and that includes handing out government jobs for loyalty when you gain office. And that's power.
