We all have strategies for dealing with issues in our lives. One of the things we learn over time is that some of them work and some of them don’t. Common strategies include anger over things we wish were different, medicating ourselves when things get stressful with our favorite stress reliever, depression, or often, trying to peddle faster to see our problems resolved. For some of us it is living with a great deal of stress, anxiety, and even fear.
There comes a time when we realize that our strategies don’t produce what we desire. Actually that is a great realization because there is a better way, an easier way. It does not revolve around us but around the Spirit of God. The hard part is this: We need to let go and let God.
Sometimes, trusting God is the hardest thing we could do because we are used to trying to figure out our problems without God. To solve our own problems is in our DNA and, of course, there are things we need to do when we have problems. But, the truth is that God has a better way that yields better results. Our strategy determines our outcome.
In the Old Testament (Zechariah 4:6) we read this: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.” This is the same message that is expressed in Psalm 20:7. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
It is a wonderful gift to come to the place where all we have is God. Because He is all that we need. But it means that we give our situations to God and let go. That we pray with faith, knowing and believing that His power is able to solve problems we cannot solve and He has the wisdom we don’t have. Furthermore, God honors our trust in Him. When we trust Him, He is faithful because He wants us to trust Him. He wants us to let go and trust Him.
What is your strategy today for dealing with the issues you have in your life? Are you trusting in your wisdom or asking for God’s wisdom? Are you ready to let God intervene and follow Him even if it makes you nervous? Can you put your issues in His hand and listen to what He says? Where He leads? Can you give Him your anxiety and worry? Can you trust His leading when He leads you in directions that you never envisioned?
Father, help me trust you rather than my horses and chariots. I want to trust your Spirit and go where you lead. I trust you today with those things that cause me worry. Amen.
