Publisher's Summary:
Out is a fast-flying, coming-of-age novel based on the plot of Dante's Purgatorio.
When you're from a small, traditionally Catholic town like Dani, coming out can be rough. But when you find yourself in the big, bad city of San Francisco, being out can be lonely, especially when you feel like you don't fit in anywhere: not with the poets, not with the Christians, not with the gays, not even, really, with your roommates. How does anyone ever find their place in the world, never mind their one true love?
Well, by placing a personal ad, of course! And by climbing all of San Francisco's secret stairway walks with your imaginary best friend: the famous poet, Frank O'Hara.
Jesus died and rose again in three days - life should be able to get better for Dani that fast. Right?

Wonderful first novel about being queer and (ex?) Catholic in the SF Bay Area! The book was recommended to me, glad I listened!
Loved all the shout-outs to favorite haunts
Reading this book catapulted me back to my days young and queer in San Francisco. Loved all the shout-outs to favorite haunts, and the hidden stairways mentions were an added treat! It has a treasured space on bookshelf.
Heartbreaking and Hopeful
I'm not a devourer if good books. I put them down when they start getting good, when I need to stay with a beautiful moment, or sink into the pain, or ponder the meaning. I set this book down several times.
"Out" is heart-breaking and heart-opening, deeply cynical and unabashedly optimistic. It is not a coming out story. It is not a coming of age story. It's not even a queer story. It is a universal story of believing oneself to be unloved and unloveable. Like Dani's walks up and down the stairs of San Francisco, the journey is painful, daunting, and will sometimes leave you breathless or laughing, but when you get to the top? The view is worth every step.
A delightful coming-of-age novel!
Wowsers. This is a refreshing take on a coming-of-age novel, engaging and funny and full of delightful narrative tangents. It is mystical and very serious and very light simultaneously and after reading it I can say that I finally sort of understand the perplexing state of Massachusetts for the very first time.
Seriously, though, it is absolutely lovely.
Beautiful debut!
Fondakowski is a poet, and that is abundantly clear when you read the prose in Out. What an amazing debut novel. I want Frank O'Hara to be my imaginary best friend, too!
