Out of Attachment
King Janak was know for his knowledge, wisdom and detachment.
There is a story about how Sukdev ji became the disciple of King Janak.
When Sukdev ji was thinking about finding a Guru for himself, his father Mahrshi Vedvyas asked him to go to King Janak.
When he reached the palace, he was disappointed at the vision he saw...of the King seemingly enjoying the luxuries of life.
He turned back and went away. King Janak immediately sent a messager after him and called him back.
As soon as he was back, they both entered into a debate about the age old philosophical questions. While they were in the midst of the discussion a messenger came to give the news that there was a fire in the palace.
The king asked him not to disturb him while he was in the middle of such an important topic.
After some time another messager came and another, with the message that the fire was spreading and getting closer and closer to where they were sitting.
King Janak was completely calm, Sukdev ji was observing everything. A time came when the flames reached both of them, Sukdev ji immediately tried to save the books which he had. Immediately the King waved his hand and the flames disappeared. Then the King told Sukdev ji, my whole palace was burning... yet I was calm as I was not attached to it, but you on the other hand are attached to your books so you could not stop yourself from saving them.
Sukdev ji was stunned and accepted the king as his Guru.
The next day the king gave him two lamps filled to the brim with oil. He asked him see the whole palace without a single drop being spilled. After a few hours when he reached the king he was overjoyed that he had passed his test...but when the king asked him about the palace he replied that he was so focused on the oil lamps that he did not see the palace at all.
The king sent him back this time he took a longer time but when he reached the king, he had all the answers to the kings questions.
The King then told him spirituality and materialism should go hand in hand for a balanced life.
