September 11, 2020Can OTs help educate and consult with law enforcement and people with disabilities in custody?Hey there everybody, I wanted to do a podcast with my friend Renee who is an occupational therapy assistant student she's trying to get her certification as an OTA and she told us a story on her cousin Elijah and his run in with law enforcement which ended up ending his life. I was told that he may have had some sensory issues and may have been on the autism spectrum, which is very common nowadays. Can OTs help law enforcement see those sensory issues teach them about auditory and tactile defensiveness? Are there not mental health programs out there for law enforcement, if they have somebody in custody who has a disability not a physical but neurological or emotional or mental health disability. Why aren't we providing them resources? Today this podcast is about what we could do as OTs can we train them can we consult with them can we be part of a mental health team why are OT lacking in mental health facilities those were the main issues. I felt like needed to be addressed, and I wanted to address it It would also be nice to know how much of law enforcement out there have the actual training to help people with disabilities such as autism spinal cord injuries traumatic brain injuries, developmental delays, and stroke. I hope you all like the podcast and please share it with people that you may know who had run in with law enforcement most importantly you know I hope this podcast will just help all the Elijah's out there. Thank you! ~ Harmeet...more55minPlay
