Born in New Haven, CT, Heidi Lender began her career reporting on the fashion universe for national magazines, writing features and styling photo shoots throughout her twenties. With a BA in apparel and textiles from Cornell University, she covered style and travel from New York to Paris, where she served as Fashion Director and Associate Bureau Chief of Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine. After Paris she went to India, where she lived part-time while studying yoga for the next eight years. In 2007, she opened and taught at a yoga studio in San Francisco, and two years later she discovered her creative self in photography. Self-taught, she began by creating self-portraits and realised a meaningful way to make sense of the world and her place in it. Her images are often based in self-inquiry that stem from personal experiences, relationships and/or investigate identity.
She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Uruguay and has exhibited internationally. Heidi is a founding member of the online collective Six Shooters, has twice been a Critical Mass finalist, received recognition from the likes of the Pollux Awards and the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Her work has been featured in PDN and Rangefinder magazines and in online photo blogs including CNN, NPR and the New Yorker’s Photo Booth. Editorial credits include WSJ Magazine, Disegno Journal and Grey Magazine. In 2014, Kehrer Verlag published the photography book “Grassland” under Lender’s pseudonym, H. Lee. She currently resides on an 80-acre ranch in Pueblo Garzón, Uruguay, where she has founded CAMPO, a nonprofit creative institute supporting international artists (www.campogarzon.org).
In this episode and her discussion with Anne, Heidi recounts her impulsive decision to leave her burgeoning career as a fashion director in Paris at the young age of 26.
A pivotal moment in Heidi's personal story, she tells Anne, is her discovery of Garzón, Uruguay. During an impromptu trip to South America, she stumbled upon her dream home in the quaint village, which became the birthplace of CAMPO. Heidi describes to Anne how her passion for photography flourishes in this picturesque setting, where the art of self-portraiture becomes a therapeutic outlet and a means of self-expression. The episode highlights how photography, combined with mindfulness practices, has been a crucial part of Heidi's healing journey.
Heidi then goes deeper into the founding and growth of CAMPO, which has evolved into a sanctuary for artists, chefs and writers from around the world. Heidi articulates her vision of creating transformative experiences for both residents and attendees, fostering a sense of community through artistic collaboration. The festival, now a three-day event with a month-long residency program, is using the theme "unsettled" this year. The theme explores migration and movement, thus reflecting Heidi's own journey of continuous reinvention.

In this episode and her discussion with Anne, Heidi recounts her impulsive decision to leave her burgeoning career as a fashion director in Paris at the young age of 26. Her tale is marked by personal challenges, including a divorce and the emotional roller coaster of IVF, which she bravely shares with Anne. Heidi's journey of self-discovery and resilience is punctuated by her immersion into the world of yoga, which led to her being trained under the renowned K. Pattabhi Jois, finding solace and a renewed sense of purpose.
Prompted by Heidi expressing the realisations she had while shopping in Goa, Anne shares a similar experience from her recent trip to Greece, emphasising the significance of unique, locally-crafted fashion. Anne also speaks candidly about her battle with rheumatoid arthritis and how yoga has been instrumental in her physical and emotional well-being, noting that movement does indeed help with pain, despite seeming counterintuitive. The episode takes a reflective turn as Heidi shares the trials and tribulations she faced during her attempts at conceiving through IVF, eventually leading her to embrace a different life path with acceptance and grace.

The episode concludes with a heartfelt discussion between Heidi and Anne on the value of solitude, introspection and the interconnectedness of creative pursuits and personal growth. Heidi shares important moments of reconnection with her past and influential figures, weaving a narrative of the importance of serendipity and openness to new perspectives. Through her story, Heidi exemplifies resilience, creativity and the transformative power of embracing life's unpredictable turns.

In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler hosts a compelling conversation with Debjani Biswas, a chemical engineer turned executive coach and best-selling author. She explains how despite the societal expectations of the time, Debjani's father encouraged her to pursue a path in engineering, a field dominated by men, thus setting the stage for her future endeavors in breaking gender barriers.
As the conversation progresses, Debjani reflects on the challenges she faced in the corporate world, particularly as an Indian woman in engineering, and how these experiences shaped her transition to becoming an advocate for workplace inclusivity. We hear her concept of being "miserably successful” (which is also the title of one of her books), where she discusses the stress and dissatisfaction that can accompany traditional measures of success. Debjani's story emphasizes the importance of finding joy and purpose in one's career.
The episode also explores Debjani's unique approach to executive coaching, which empowers leaders and redefines success beyond conventional metrics. She discusses the importance of executive presence, active listening, and the core competencies outlined by the International Coach Federation (ICF) in fostering a supportive environment for clients. Her journey into coaching, prompted by a perceptive manager, underscores the value of recognising and nurturing one's innate abilities.
Towards the end of the episode, Debjani emphasises the power of storytelling and imagery in challenging societal biases and fostering inclusivity.

Anne V Muhlethaler interviews Ana Maria Sierra, a market development and strategic communication consultant living in Colombia. She is a Fulbright Scholar with a master’s degree in mass media from the New School for Social Research in New York. Following a 15-year corporate career in business management and leading senior management teams in Colombian and multinational banking and service companies, Ana founded Sierra Restrepo Consultores in 2009, a consultancy specialising in marketing and strategic communication. From an early education in the arts, then media before going into banking, Ana Maria has built a robust career and has worked with clients across Latin America in the coffee sector.
In their conversation, Ana tells Anne about her journey with MODA ELAN, the conscious and ethical jewellery platform she founded that aims to be the bridge that brings together the best ethical jewellery designers from around the world with the jewellery masters and gold panners from the biogeographical Chocó territories in the Pacific Coasts of Colombia. Ana shares how she became motivated by her love for handcrafted jewellery after taking a silversmithing course in Bogota, which led her to transition from a successful career in promoting coffee consumption in Colombia to pursuing her passion for silversmithing and artisanal metallurgy and eventually founding Moda Elan. Through this B2B platform she hopes to support local artisans and promote ethical jewellery practices.
Leveraging her consultancy firm, Ana explains how she began to sell her jewellery as pop-up shops and fairs, gradually incorporating contemporary urban jewellers into her portfolio. Her deep involvement with the Alliance for Responsible Mining opened her eyes to the importance of responsibly sourced minerals and single-origin gold, which became a cornerstone of her ethical jewellery brand. She became passionate about the powerful pre-Hispanic metallurgy legacy she discovered, which led her to choose to promote work rooted in the history of the Americas, with its unique aesthetics, materials — and, through the jewellery, bring those values to the world. Ana’s passion is evident as she tells Anne how she is committed to work with the Afro goldsmith communities of the Chocó Biogeographical Region while adding sustainability to their cultural heritage around goldsmithing.
Ana's work is characterised by a strong commitment to social impact, particularly in supporting vulnerable communities like women miners and the Afro-Colombian artisan jewellers of this region. She talks about the impact of unlicensed mining and emphasises the need for transparency in the jewellery supply chain, advocating for ethical sourcing and fair trade practices.
Looking ahead, Ana offers her vision for Moda Elan, which would be to expand its reach and bring more awareness and support for ethical jewellery, reaching the wider ethical luxury market and leveraging the stories and values behind each piece to spark meaningful conversations with the view to drive sustainable change. She acknowledges the challenges she faces, such as managing rural associations and competing with large gold traders, but remains determined to overcome them. To illustrate that point, Ana jokes that this project is like “a jumbo jet with a blender motor.”
Ana's journey is a testament to the power of shared values and the potential for creating positive impact through dedication and collaboration. Happy listening!

Arthur Gourounlian (@gourounlian) is an Armenian-born professional dancer, choreographer and television personality, and most recently one of the three judges on Dancing with the Stars Ireland.
Arthur has performed and toured with some of the most beloved performers of recent time, from Bananarama to Beyoncé, Pink to Kylie Minogue, and many more. After a successful career as a dancer, he went on to take a leading role in casting, coaching, movement directing and choreographing music videos, world tours, media campaigns, and trade/fashion shows for Christian Louboutin, Diesel, Puma, Jean-Paul Gaultier among others. He has also appeared on television and movies, fashion shows, and advertising campaigns himself, and performed in Britain's Got Talent, Celebrity X Factor, the Brit Awards and The Royal Variety Show.
Arthur and Anne met in 2010 when she was working for Christian Louboutin. They collaborated on a project for online platform Fashionair, when Arthur trained Christian for his first and only dance performance, which culminated in a viral video that saw the famous shoe designer tap dance his way in a dream sequence on a London stage.
In this conversation, Arthur shares with Anne his harrowing journey from Armenia to Belgium as a refugee with his family, escaping the war when he was just twelve years old. Then how, while their refugee status was still being decided, his family was rocked by the death of his father. Shortly after, young Arthur left for Brussels to try his hand at hairdressing, only to find himself being picked out of the crowd and selected as a dancer. From there, Arthur discusses his many surprises and successes, how he went from Milan to London, and made his mark on the dance scene as a performer before turning to choreography and creative direction.
Arthur dreamt of making it big, an homage to his father, and moving away from the refugee status he carried as an adolescent. The successful and charismatic personality is also the other half of one of Ireland’s most beloved celebrity couples, as he is married to Big Brother alumni/star Brian Dowling. The two of them recently welcomed their first child into the world, Blake Maria Rose, and Arthur shares the ups and downs that have led to this most joyous moment.
Arthur’s story is quite unlike any other. As Anne reflects to him, it’s epic enough to be hinting at Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. A sparkling, touching and deeply positive interview with someone who will certainly light up your day. Happy listening.
Favourite quote of the episode:
‘I only keep things that Arthur wants to keep because I only keep what I think is best for me. Why would I listen to you? It's your journey. I want to create my own journey.’

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Muhlethaler interviews celebrity fitness trainer and former ballerina Julie Granger. Anne came across Julie via an online recommendation and was immediately struck not only by the instructor’s passion for teaching and the effectiveness of her classes (particularly Brooklyn Barre), but also by the combination of her warmth and dry sense of humour.
In this interview, they dig into Julie’s journey from the outskirts of Paris to the Boston Ballet, why she left her ballerina career behind, and how she decided to pursue new callings, including yoga, fitness and entrepreneurship.
Currently based between Paris and Lisbon, Julie explains how she is ‘three-quarters teacher’, and why she is not teaching by default but as a choice since it’s something she truly loves. Having opened her first studio the week before the first COVID lockdown in 2020, the ex-ballerina opens up on the difficulties she faced then and how grateful she is to have been able to continue to lead her community of students (her ‘Squad,’ as she calls them) virtually.
Anne and Julie discuss the competitive culture of celebrity trainers in New York and the benefits of discipline and passion. Julie also shares how she wants to offer her students not just the benefits of a toned and energised body but for them to have a great time while engaging with fitness, as well as how she hopes to make the benefits of ballet available to all. Finally, Julie covers how she’s learned to be kinder to herself, as we often are our own harshest critics, and why kindness is what matters most.
A passionate, wise, and spirited interview. Happy listening!

In this one-of-a-kind episode, host of the Out of the Clouds podcast, Anne V Mühlethaler, is the ‘guest,’ this time being interviewed by her friend, podcast host and journalist Etain Lavelle.
Anne shares in her introduction that Etain is like extended family to her. They became friends in their twenties and shared a flat on London’s Gloucester Road for a few years. Etain was the best person to interview Anne for this special episode.
In this conversation, Etain dives into Anne’s life journey, asking about her childhood memories and her unconventional education. Anne explains how she found herself settling into a retail career at Christian Louboutin, which was then a small label, after abandoning her pursuit at a music career. She also recounts the outset of what ended up as a seventeen-year stint at the now global shoe brand.
Later, Anne talks about the vision behind her coaching, consulting and storytelling practice and the genesis of her podcast Out of the Clouds, before talking about why being consistent in communication is just as essential as choosing the right platforms for a brand.
The two discuss successes and lessons learned from difficulties at home during Anne’s teenage years. They reflect how her past put her on the path that she is on, though, leading her to become a mindfulness meditation teacher. It’s an emotional topic for Anne, who fights back tears as she reveals the intimate connection between the two.
To conclude, Etain and Anne discuss language, their favourite books, how their travels have changed them, and the importance of trusting the process.
A unique interview that offers a glimpse into Anne’s backstory. Happy listening!

Episode NotesKnown in the yoga world as THE teachers’ teacher, Annie Carpenter (@anniecarpentersmartflow) shares her story with Anne, who has been an avid student, first via online platform Glo.com, before attending live Zoom classes and IRL workshops with her in 2022.
Annie’s journey starts in Virginia, but she tells Anne how she found her path early on with dance, leading her to the Martha Graham company and New York City. From getting a scholarship to working at the junior company and briefly joining the main company, Annie found a calling in what she refers to as authentic self-movement and in teaching at the Martha Graham Center. An introvert, she shares with Anne how yoga became an essential part of her life, thanks to Integral yoga (Swami Satchidananda’s school) which felt like a refuge from the competitiveness of the dance world.
Annie explains how after a trip to LA and a conversation with her teacher Maty Ezraty, she impulsively relocated to the West Coast and turned to teaching yoga full time, training at Yoga Works under Maty and Lisa Walford. They go on to talk about teaching, about Annie's movement principles and energy, how to create inspiration for students, and why Annie founded her own yoga school, Smart Flow Yoga.
Annie also shares why continuing to evolve is essential, as well as learning to let go of preconceived notions. She explains how she has learnt to tap into her students’ expectations rather than relying on her own. Now based in Northern California, the teacher, who turned 65 this year, also talks about the stages of life, or ashrams, and she is learning to ‘retire’ whatever is not supportive in her practice. Quoting Noam Chomsky, she says: "If you are teaching today what you were teaching five years ago, either your field is dead, or you are.”
Annie also reveals her passion for bird-watching, her mindfulness and pranayama practices, and how learning to be still was the doorway to her meditation practice. Finally, she answers the most delicate and profound question of all, one that Annie regularly asks her students: who is Annie?
A joyous, profoundly thoughtful and inspiring interview. Enjoy!

There are serendipitous moments in life, particularly when two women who are equally passionate about storytelling and connection end up on a podcast together. In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler interviews author, advisor and self-professed hype woman Lisa Bragg.
Lisa starts by sharing her journey from TV news reporter to launching her business, MediaFace, in 2007, which pioneered what we now know as content for our digital world. She also offers thoughts on the challenges posed by growing up with Bragg as a last name.
That leads Anne to ask Lisa about the genesis for her book, “Bragging Rights,” as well as how she designed the research which underpins it. Lisa speaks about the importance of creating a safe environment for people to talk about their successes, either at home or at work, to support personal and professional growth. While some research out there advises women not to brag or celebrate their successes for fear of backlash, Lisa challenges the concept (and the research) and suggests that it’s time for us to change the culture and ‘sister up’.
She goes on to explain how taking an inventory of our personal values can be one of many exercises to explore meaningful self-promotion, highlighting that we are all the “CEO of our own life.”
The two women discuss that while purposeful self-promotion is important, it’s often challenging. Anne admits to barely being able to name any of her successes, and Lisa responds that ‘she is her book,’ meaning that she, too, has times where she goes back into her shell, waiting to be discovered instead of putting herself out there —and she wrote the book on it!
Lisa is clear about her mission to help others be seen and heard, and leaves listeners with this recommendation: Don't wait for others to give you opportunities, take them into your own hands, adding “celebrate your successes and don't tear down others for their achievements.”
A powerful conversation with a compelling guest. Happy listening!
