Over-powering kids and using willpower on ourselves is one way; there is another way. One that has to do with consent, connection, receptiveness, and an internal want and “YES”. I practice the latter both with myself and my little one.
Over-powering is easier in the moment but erodes a potential special connection. When I see people grab kids by the forearm my heart lurches both for the kid and the parent. It seems like it takes a lot of work to slow down, talk to our kids, and be patient for them to respond and say “yes”… but it is often only a few minutes… this few minutes + presence is an investment that PAYS off in folds. Less tantrums, less fighting, less rebellion … more connection, more trust, more agreement. and my little one.
