Discussions about burnout and resilience have become increasing common over the last ten years, particularly amongst those in healthcare.
According to the NHS Practitioner Health programme, the number of doctors seeking help for mental health issues has risen by more than three-quarters within two years, with more than 5,600 doctors using the service in England in 2022/23.
In addition, a recent GMC survey found that GP’s were most likely to experience ‘deep discontent’ when practicing medicine. Whilst a new BMA survey found that 73% of GP trainees reported experiencing burnout and stress as a direct result o their clinical work.
We sat down to talk about what is resilience - and is it something we are born with or can we learn to become more resilient? We also shared our personal experiences with both building resilience and overcoming burnout over the course of our careers. In my own career, burnout nearly caused me to walk away from medicine entirely as a junior doctor.
