Overcoming Sin

1 John 2 15-17

15. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world.

17. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

That which has been is what will be

That which is done is what will be done

And there is nothing new under the sun.

Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”?

It has already been in ancient times before us.

Genesis 3:6-7

“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.”

Jesus Tempted and Did Not Sin

Matthew 4:1-11

1. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
3. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4. But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
5. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 
6. And said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’
7. Jesus said to him, “It is written again, You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”
8. Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10. The Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”
11. Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

 It is the Word which guides us. 

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

The Word is profitable to us.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The Word will never pass away.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” Matthew 24:35
