2. Madame,
I would like to use this opportunity of the departure [from Turin] of Monsieur your son for some profit, but I do not know of what I should speak: Should I praise you for your fidelity to God?
Ought I chide you? I do not know at all. So I will take a sure course and that is to counsel you to begin each day, abandoning the past to the Lord’s mercy and the future to his divine Providence. In the meantime, reflect each day that you are entrusted with a mission by the good God. In regard to your temporal affairs, never let anything trouble you, and the same with respect to your faults, taking care to counteract them immediately by an act of love of God. Be attentive to practice the virtues of patience and gentleness; you can make a special examination concerning this in the evening and at midday.
Do not forget meditation, at least for a quarter of an hour, frequently raising up your heart to God throughout the day. Remember spiritual reading as well, if it be but a single page. Finally, do not fail to receive communion at least two or three times a week. I beg you to inform me about all these things, praying to the good God that he assist you in carrying them out.
It may be that I will come myself to learn how you are doing. It would be a great consolation for me, and I hope for it all the more since my eyes, which continually grow weaker, will not permit me to dedicate myself to other occupations that might hinder me from coming, as happened last year.
I do not have time to remain longer with you in this letter as I would desire, and so I conclude by recommending myself to your holy prayers, and blessing you, having the honor of being,

La Quinta Regla:
En tiempo de desolación nunca hacer mudanza; sino estar firme y constante en las resoluciones y determinación en que se estaba el día anterior a dicha desolación, o en la determinación en que se estaba en la consolación precedente. Porque, así como en la consolación es más bien el buen espíritu el que nos guía y aconseja, así en la desolación es el malo, con cuyos consejos no podemos tomar un rumbo para decidir rectamente.

Episodio 6 -La Cuarta Regla – Desolación Espiritual
La Cuarta Regla:
De la Desolación Espiritual. Llamo desolación a todo lo contrario de la tercera regla, como es la oscuridad del alma, la turbación en ella, el movimiento hacia las cosas bajas y terrenas, el desasosiego de las diferentes agitaciones y tentaciones, el movimiento hacia la falta de confianza, sin esperanza, sin amor, cuando uno se encuentra todo perezoso, tibio, triste y como separado de su Creador y Señor.
Porque, así como el consuelo es contrario a la desolación, del mismo modo los pensamientos que provienen del consuelo son contrarios a los pensamientos que provienen de la desolación.
En este episodio con el P. Timothy Gallagher, en conversación con Kris McGregor, explora la Cuarta Regla de San Ignacio sobre la Desolación Espiritual. La desolación espiritual se describe como lo opuesto a la consolación espiritual, caracterizada por sentimientos de oscuridad, perturbación, movimiento hacia las cosas terrenales, falta de confianza, desesperanza y sentirse separado de Dios. La Tercera Regla:

 La tercera es de consolación espiritual. Llamo consolación cuando se causa algún movimiento interior en el alma, por el cual el alma llega a inflamarse de amor a su Creador y Señor; y cuando en consecuencia no puede amar ninguna cosa creada sobre la faz de la tierra en sí misma, sino en el Creador de todas ellas.
Asimismo, cuando derrama lágrimas que mueven al amor de su Señor, ya sea por el dolor de los propios pecados, ya por la Pasión de Cristo nuestro Señor, ya por otras cosas directamente relacionadas con su servicio y alabanza.
Finalmente, llamo consolación a todo aumento de esperanza, fe y caridad, y a toda alegría interior que llama y atrae a las cosas celestiales y a la salvación del alma, sosegándola y dándole paz en su Creador y Señor.

“First Rule. The first rule: In persons who are going from mortal sin to mortal sin, the enemy is ordinarily accustomed to propose apparent pleasures to them, leading them to imagine sensual delights and pleasures in order to hold them more and make them grow in their vices and sins. In these persons the good spirit uses a contrary method, stinging and biting their consciences through their rational power of moral judgment.
Second Rule. The second: In persons who are going on intensely purifying their sins and rising from good to better in the service of God our Lord, the method is contrary to that in the first rule. For then it is proper to the evil spirit to bite, sadden, and place obstacles, disquieting with false reasons, so
that the person may not go forward. And it is proper to the good spirit to give courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations and quiet, easing and taking away all obstacles, so that the person may go forward in doing good.
Third Rule. The third is of spiritual consolation. I call it consolation when some interior movement is caused in the soul, through which the soul comes to be inflamed with love of its Creator and Lord, and, consequently when it can love no created thing on the face of the earth in itself, but only in the Creator of them all. Likewise when it sheds tears that move to love of its Lord, whether out of sorrow for one’s sins,

These guidelines, when well explained, equip hearers to be aware of, understand the significance of, and take action in response to their spiritual experience. Said differently, they take Christian anthropology—the fact that only in Christ can the human person be understood fully—seriously, and render it operative. When one applies these guidelines, the full Christian understanding of the human person ceases to remain a theological construct and is rendered concretely applicable in daily living. For over three decades, I have seen many apply these guidelines with much fruit.“
