Everyone loves stories about evil dragons, beautiful maidens, and brave heroes! But these are more than just made-up stories with no deeper value. Throughout the Bible, you can trace this very same pattern of an epic rescue mission.
The Pattern in Exodus
The pattern begins in the book of Exodus. God defeats the evil dragon, Pharaoh, and delivers Israel, His bride, from Egypt. He makes a covenant with His bride, marrying her. Finally, the Creator of the universe comes to dwell with His bride in a tabernacle.
The Pattern in Jesus
The pattern continues through the life of Jesus, our Rescuer. He defeats Satan by refusing to succumb to temptation and ultimately dying to defeat sin and death. He wins His bride by sacrificing Himself for sinners. He has now come to dwell with His bride, living among His people through the Holy Spirit.
The Pattern Completed
The pattern is completed in the book of Revelation. Jesus will return to defeat the dragon once and for all. He will marry His bride, the Church, and live with her in complete joy forever.
This Is Not the End
That may seem like the end of the story, but it is only the beginning! C.S. Lewis wrote these words to close his book, The Last Battle: “All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story … which goes on forever, in which every chapter is better than the one before.”
Through Christ, this is the incredible future awaiting those of us who are in Christ Jesus!
