What happens when you're building something impressive but losing sight of who you're becoming in the process?
In this episode, Preston Poore and David Ashcraft explore the tension between outcomes and identity, and why success means little if your character isn't growing alongside it. They discuss how adversity, humility, and surrender shape leaders, and why who you are matters more than what you accomplish.
From David's journey of leading a church from 150 people to 22,000 to Preston's struggle with writing How Is Greater Than What, this conversation challenges leaders to examine their motives, embrace authenticity, and focus on who they're becoming rather than simply what they're building.
Episode Highlights
[02:02] Outcome vs. Identity: Why results don't define who you are.
[04:05] Five Warning Signs: How success can distract you from personal growth.
[04:57] The Book That Changed Everything: Preston's struggle to write authentically about his faith.
[07:31] Integrity Over Reach: Why Preston chose honesty over a wider audience.
[10:02] Meet David Ashcraft: Lessons from leading a church of 22,000 people.
[12:01] The Credit Isn't Yours: How one conversation challenged David's leadership.
[15:26] Surrender and Identity: Learning to follow God's calling instead of personal ambition.
[18:22] When the Title Changes: Discovering who you are beyond your role.
[29:51] When Recognition Outpaces Character: Why leaders need time for personal growth.
[33:02] What Really Matters: Considering the legacy you'll leave behind.
[35:41] Moses and Formation: Why becoming comes before your greatest work.
[38:08] Three Lessons for Leaders: Choose formation, authenticity, and daily surrender.

Episode 20 is here.
And this one is a big one because we're talking about something that's easy to lose sight of when you're busy building a career, growing a business, or working towards the next big thing. Who are you becoming while you're building it all?
In this season finale, I sit down with David Ashcraft, who spent 32 years leading a church that grew from 150 people to around 22,000. But behind all that growth was a journey of adversity, character formation, and learning that leadership isn't just about what you accomplish.
One thing that really stood out to me was David sharing what happened after he stepped away from the church. He had preached about how your identity isn't your title, but when the title was gone, he realized just how much of his own identity was tied to what he did. And honestly, I think that's something many of us don't realize until we have to let go of something we've spent years building.
Because you can have the title, the recognition, the impressive results, and still be figuring out who you are without them. And sometimes, the very things we call success can distract us from the person we're becoming in the process.
This conversation is a reminder that the goal isn't just to build something people admire. It's to become someone you can be proud of, someone whose character, faith, and values are reflected in the way they lead and live.
Episode 20, Outcome vs. Identity, is here, and it's the season finale! Go listen and tell me what part of this conversation stayed with you.

Episode 19 is here.
Have you ever worked so hard to achieve something, only to get there and wonder why it doesn’t feel as good as you thought it would?
I spent 21.5 years at Coca-Cola building teams, hitting targets, and working toward goals. When I retired, the titles, recognition, and structure I had built my life around were suddenly gone. I knew my career didn’t define me, but learning to live that truth was a different story.
In this episode, I sit down with Chris Simpson, president and CEO of CBMC International, to talk about achievement, meaning, and the danger of tying our identity to power, recognition, and success.
Chris shared how he was doing well professionally but began to notice something was missing at home, in his marriage, and in how he showed up for his family. It made me think about how easy it is to look successful on the outside while neglecting what matters most.
Achievements can build your résumé, but they cannot be the foundation of your identity. You don’t have to wait until retirement to ask what you’re really building and who you’re becoming along the way.

In this episode, Preston Poore and seasoned executive James Ackerman explore the tension between success and significance, and why strong results don't always tell the full story of effective leadership. They discuss the difference between measuring output and impact, and what it means to lead in a way that leaves people and organizations better than they found them.
From Preston's experience discovering significance during a mission trip to a Tijuana landfill to James' journey from corporate leadership to Prison Fellowship, this conversation challenges leaders to look beyond the scoreboard and consider who they are impacting, why they lead, and what ultimately matters.

Episode 17 is here.
And this one really got me thinking about the difference between having faith and actually letting your faith shape the way you live and lead.
In this episode, I sit down with Ashley Smalley, founder and CEO of Smalley Consulting, to talk about what it really looks like to bring your faith into the workplace without making it forced, performative, or complicated.
One thing that really stood out to me was Ashley's story about a truck driver she worked with whose wife had passed away. She didn't preach to him. She didn't force a conversation about faith. She simply cared enough to remember the important dates, check in on him, and be present.
And eventually, he asked her why she did it. Sometimes the way we live opens the door for the words to come later.
This conversation is about faith, leadership, workplace culture, wisdom, relationships, and learning how to live the same life on Monday that we say we believe in on Sunday. Because maybe it's not about being louder about our faith.
Maybe it's about letting it show up in how we treat people. Go listen and tell me what part of this conversation stayed with you. Link in bio!
