The attractive and cunning genius Ryan Kroll is known throughout the private sector as a man who can obtain information by any means necessary often using creative and violent tactics to get what he wants. So when he appears in the affluent and seemingly quiet community of Pacific Heights and quickly begins illicit affairs with the wives of two of San Franciscos most powerful businessmen, his behavior is suspect. But when the psychotherapist treating both women realizes that Kroll has broken into her files and is using the womens private thoughts and fears against them, manipulating them to the point of insanity, it becomes more than coincidence it becomes deadly. The job of capturing Kroll before its too late falls to Marten Fane, a retired detective known for his clear head and complete discretion. Haunted by his own demons and employing his quick wit, Fane might be the perfect person to foil Krolls mental games and prevent him from committing what could possibly be a traceless form of murder.
With a tight plot and a ruthless narrative, Pacific Heights introduces the Marten Fane series with the breakneck suspense and extraordinary talent only a bestselling author could create.

A Good Private Eye procedural by one of my favorite authors of all time
A very good suspenseful read, excellent character development and psychological insight. The main characters are likeable, complex and interesting. I look forward to the next installment, just like I used to anxiously await a new novel about Stuart Haydon.
I feel like I have found a long lost friend!
I first discovered David Lindsey (Paul Harper) in the early 80's when I was in my 20's. A former college roommate turned me on to A Cold Mind, an extraordinary novel of thrilling suspense. I tore through his next 2 works, Heat From Another Sun and Spiral. Lindsey graphically and exquisitely captured the horrific evil that men can do, in unforgettable mind imprinting violent prose. All 3 still proudly sit on my bookshelf, in my top 10 of all time, and I have read at least 1,500 books in my 59 years on earth.
I have read all but one of his works, a loyal reader, like a junkie looking for that first high once again. I urge you to give him a shot, you will be glad you did!
A good book, but he is capable of great.
I believe his real name is David Lindsey and he has most often published under that name. His mysteries/procedurals are among the best that I've ever read. Mercy is one of the great mystery/psychosexual/serial killer novels and no one I have lent it to was less than thrilled (though don't bother with the movie). He has a special talent for portraying character and place that seems to me to place him within a select group of really talented writers. However, in more recent years he has tailed off in my view and his books, though covering the same dangerous topics, seem to be written in a looser, more made for tv movie style. I would say that in The Color of Night he went from a brilliant writer to a very good one and has perhaps passed his peak (but, let's face it, that happens with a lot of writers after one or two). But, his talent cannot be denied. Read all of his older books.
