Last night, after work, I attended an art exhibit showcasing a Filipino artist named Pacita Abad from Basco, Batanes, an island in the Philippines. Her work was defined by color and transformation. Seeing my people and my culture in an art exhibit brought tears to my eyes, literally. I was tearing up because the representation made up heart feel so full. Growing up I learned about America's history and last night I learned a lot about my people's history and the work these older Filipina women did to correct an error in our history books that took 8 years. These women are inspiring.
