The 4 Horsemen of the the San Diego Padres’ bullpen pitched 4 1/3 innings of near-perfect relief, Bryce Johnson went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and the Friars snapped their losing streak at 4 games with a 3-1 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis.

 

Pads’ starter Randy Vasquez pitched extremely well, giving up just 1 run on 1 hit in 4 2/3 innings.

 

The horsemen took over from there. Adrian Morejon pitched an inning, Jeremiah Estrada (W,  4-4) went 1 1/3, then Jason Adam and Robert Suarez (Sv, 30) each worked an inning to nail it down. They gave up just 2 hits and struck out 5.

 

Jake Cronenworth (1-3) scored 2 runs, and Fernando Tatis added a RBI groundout for the Padres, who have a chance to split this 4-game series with a win tomorrow.

 

Manny Machado (2-3, 7-12 in the series so far) was hit by a pitch twice today. The 2nd time caused the benches to empty. Cardinals’ star Wilson Contreras (0-2, now 4-7 in the series) was hit by a pitch again today, after he was nailed yesterday in his 1st at-bat following a monster game in the opener.

The Pads and Cardinals will wrap up this 4-game series tomorrow in St. Louis.

 

Stephen Kolek (3-5, 4.28 ERA) will start for the Padres, facing the Cardinals’ Michael McGreevy. (2-1, 3.48 ERA) 1st pitch is set for 11:15am PT.
