Manny Machado smashed a grand slam to put an exclamation point on a 5-run 9th inning that gave the Padres a 7-2 win over the Washington Nationals to start the 2nd half of the season with their 4th win in 5 games.
 

Jake Cronenworth singled leading off the 9th and went to 3rd on a single by Jose Iglesias. Elias Díaz put down his 2nd safety squeeze of the game, scoring Cronenworth to give San Diego a 3-2 lead. Fernando Tatis Jr.’s single and a walk to Luis Arraez loaded the bases for Manny, who crushed a bullet into the Padres bullpen.
 

The Pads led 2-0 into the 8th, but CJ Abrams’ 2-run homer off Jason Adam tied the game at 2.
 

Xander Bogaerts had 2 hits and scored a run for the Padres. Wandy Peralta (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings to pick up the W.
 

The Nats have lost 5 straight and 9 of their last 10 games.
 

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Jackson Merrill singled and scored on Cronenworth’s sacrifice fly.
 

Bogaerts led off the 6th inning with a bloop double, went to 3rd on a bunt single by Cronenworth and scored on Díaz’s 1st squeeze bunt to make it 2-0.
 

Dylan Cease went 5 1/3 innings for the Padres, giving up just 4 singles and striking out 10 without walk ing anyone.
