PADRES POSTCAST: NESTOR CORTES NOT SO NASTY, San Diego PADRES DROP OPENER 7-4 at Minnesota Twins
Jake Cronenworth’s error led to a 4-run 4th inning, starting pitcher Nestor Cortes only made it 3 innings before getting ejected in the 4th, the Pads left a ton of runners on base, and the result is a 7-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins in this series opener.
The Pads kept the heat on late, scoring a pair of runs in the 7th on Fernando Tatis' RBI single. Former Twin Luis Arraez hit a bullet right at the 2nd baseman, and Fernando got doubled up off 1st to end the threat.
The Padres also threatened in the 9th, but Twins Closer Kody Funderburke- who had walked 2 runners on base- struck out Ramon Laureano to end the game.
Cortes (2-3) was thrown out by home plate ump Manny Gonzalez during a mound visit following a walk that gave the Twins runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out in that dreadful 4th inning. Wandy Peralta came in for Cortes and got Kody Clemens to hit a perfect double-play ball right at Jake Cronenworth, who let it go through his legs allowing both runners to score and giving the Twins a 5-2 lead.
The Padres had taken the 2-1 lead on an RBI single off the bat of Jose Iglesias, starting at short for the injured Xander Bogaerts. The Pads went up 1-0 on Arraez's sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd. The Twins tied it at 1 on a fielder's choice groundout in the bottom of the 3rd.
Minnesota added 2 more runs in the 5th, including Royce Lewis' solo homer.
Zebby Matthews (4-4) pitched 6 solid innings, giving up 3 runs to pick up the win.Funderburke got his 2nd career save.
Gavin Sheets went 3-3 for the San Diego. Fernando added 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Iglesias also had 2 hits and an RBI.
The Padres have lost 4 of their last 5 games, but they remain just 2 games behind the LA Dodgers- who lost 3-0 to the Arizona D'Backs- in the NL West.
