Dalton Rushing’s 3-run HR off Jeremiah Estrada broke a 2-2 tie as the LA Dodgers scored 5 runs in the 7th inning off the Padres’ vaunted bullpen in a huge 8-2 win at Petco Park to avoid the 3-game sweep and leave San Diego tied for 1st place in the NL West.

 

Freeman hit 2 home runs to lead the Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani added a solo shot, and the Pads’ offense went scoreless over the last 6 innings against Yoshinobu Yamamoto and a Dodgers’ bullpen that just got back Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates.

 

In a surprising move, Padres’ Manager Mike Shildt went with Estrada- who has been great against everyone else but has given up 5 home runs against the Dodgers this season- instead of Jason Adam or Adrian Morejon, who had success vs LA this season, and this series.

 

Pads’ Starter Nick Pivetta went 6 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 earned runs while striking out 7 and walking 3.

 

Freeman- who went 2-3 with 3 RBI- also hit solo home run in the 6th inning to tie it 2-2.

 

Elias Diaz hit a 2-run homer off Dodgers’ Ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto to give the Padres a 2-1 lead in the 3rd.

 

Ramon Laureano robbed Teoscar Hernandez of a grand slam with a leaping catch over the centerfield wall, then Pivetta struck out Alex Freeland and Andy Pages back-to-back to end a high-stress 1st inning that saw him give up just 1 run on a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield off the bat of Hernandez after walking Shohei Ohtani & Freddie Freeman around a Mookie Betts single to start the inning.
