It’s Back to School and working a ‘9 to 5’ RIP Dolly Parton! For our 16th episode we have special guest and recent British Empire Medal honouree Mr Roger Walton from Alder Hey Hospital In Liverpool. As a paediatric orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in Neuromuscular conditions and Obstetric Brachial Plexus Palsy, we discuss what’s new and exciting in cerebral palsy such as hip guided growth, marker-less gait analysis and knee surveillance as well as what he has learnt in his involvement during the Southport Terror Attack (July 2024) including how we can improve systems and ourselves to deliver emergent care including preparedness through simulation, teamwork, the adoption of rapid infusers, debriefing and psychological support and focusing on how we make people feel as one of our key outcomes.

For our 15th episode we have special guest / Guru of Gait / ex-stand up comedian Dr Adam Shortland, Clinical Director of the One Small Step Gait Lab at Evelina / Guys Hospital in London. Adam discussed his work with gait analysis, particularly focusing on children with cerebral palsy, where they use retroreflective markers, force plates, electromyography, and ultrasound to measure muscle size and architecture. He explained their ongoing research project examining whether muscle volumes at baseline predict success after orthopaedic surgery, and a new initiative using smartphone technology to measure mobility and participation in the community for adults and young people with cerebral palsy.

As an incredible educator, surgeon and all round human being, Mike discusses his practice at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, where he and his colleagues provide general paediatric orthopedic services with subspecialty interests to North Scotland, with Mike focusing on hip and neuromuscular conditions. He shares his experience with dyslexia and how alternative learning methods helped his medical education, noting that he now uses AI tools to assist with processing complex documents in his role as Training Program Director (TPD).

Welcome to the 11th EPISODE of the BSCOS Paediatric Orthopaedic Digest (POD)cast & our 3rd festive episode we have invited more orthopaedic royalty: Professor Tim Theologis! Although recently retired from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, he continues to be heavily involved in academic research especially in children with cerebral palsy. Welcome to the (delayed) 10th & SUMMER BOTOX SPECIAL EPISODE of BSCOS Paediatric Orthopaedic Digest (POD)cast with Caroline Edwards, Head of Childrens Surgery  at Plymouth hospital who started her consultant career at Southampton Childrens Hospital, she set up and developed the neuromuscular service. She proposes a "hub and spoke" model for learning at busy tertiary centres and shared her research on the surgical vulnerability score, a tool to assess the likelihood of early death in patients with neuromuscular disorders.
