Dr. Nate Link is a criminologist, assistant professor, and Director of the Graduate Program in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice. He is also affiliated with the Health Sciences Center and the graduate program in prevention science. Given his background in social work, he aims to create knowledge that can improve both public policy and the lives of those in contact with the justice system. He primarily researches issues in corrections and sentencing, including financial sanctions and debt, prisoner reentry and desistance from crime, mental/physical health, and crime/recidivism control strategies. In this episode, Dr. Link discussed the historical reference and purpose of legal and financial obligations. He also discussed the hardships of financial and legal obligations and the consequences of these obligations. Our conversation emphasized how financial and legal obligations can impede reentry outcomes. Dr. Link provided recommendations on how to best address financial and legal obligations within the criminal justice system.
