Pain & Pleasure - DMN8 the Day 148

Listen Later

In life, in business, relationships, whatever we are motivated by two things, pain and pleasure. It's what motivates us. You think about it, it goes down to those foundations. You're motivated by pain. You're motivated by pleasure. And the great David Goggins says, "motivation is sh*t because motivation is just what gets you started." So something happens to you that causes pain, you're motivated to remove the pain, something that happens to you. That causes pleasure. You're motivated to continually create that pleasure. That's why when you make money, it feels good, you wanna continue to make that money. When you get kicked in the nuts, you never wanna get kicked in the nuts again. When your parents tell you, don't put your hand on the hot stove and you do it anyway, you never do it again. We're motivated and instructed by two things, pain and pleasure. And the problem is they all go back helping to create your mindset and mindset is the most important thing to help you to gain success. You see when your mindset is focused on success and pain happens, you're gonna have a motivation to not let that pain occur again, but your mindset is gonna keep you focused on where it is you need to go, or you focus on success and something pleasurable happens. It knocks you off your game. Maybe your focus on building the best physical version of you. And you have some buddies in town. So you wanna go hit at the bars with them and you get a little rowdy, have a few brewskis more than you should, or have brewskis than you shouldn't have. Like the pleasure, it's easy to perpetuate, but your mindset keeps you focused on what the goal is. You see Burton Hughes in a talk he gave to, apex member here recently said "that most people die at 25, we just don't bury them until they're 75." And the problem and what he is stating with that is we get wrapped up in what, what it is in our lives that we think matters. And we let negativity creep in and that's where the motivation it's over. Like you let negativity creep in. You let negativity tell you, you don't deserve something. You can't achieve something. You can't do something. Then it's about mindset to get you back to where you were. And a lot of people in his quote, "most people die at 25, we just don't bury them until they're 75." What he's saying is the negativity, the negativity stops them from living. It keeps them from achieving their dreams, keeps them from achieving their purpose. So what you have to do is be focused on you and what you can do to make yourself better. That mindset of renewing yourself daily of getting into the trenches and making sure that you're achieving what's necessary. That accountability mirror, that David Goggins talks about. When you're looking at the accountability mirror, are you proud of yourself? Yes or no. If you're not making the changes to become proud of yourself if you are then do then give yourself levels to step up to that next level. But your mindset has to be in place and it has to be solid to help you get to where you want to be because motivation's gonna be there and it's gonna be fleeting. But your mindset is what's gonna help you achieve when the chips are down. So resolve to be focused and to have that mindset of them never gonna fail. That's the true character of a successful individual. I'm never gonna fail. That means you're gonna have failures. You're just not going to stop because failure is the stop. When you get pushed back, you reset, you move forward, get pushed back again. You reset, you push forward. Change your mindset, you change your life. You change your life, you'll DMN8 the day.
