Review by someone who actually bought and read this book
My boyfriend bought this book for me as a present before our sailing trip from Boracay to Palawan. The author certainly follows the adage of "write what you know", from the detailed descriptions of weaponry and small details of Filipino culture (I actually used his description of how to cook fish on a beach to, well, cook fish on a beach).
Other than that, the plot and dialogue was ridiculous, this book is really fun to read aloud because it's so silly. Many times I contemplated tossing it overboard to reduce the weight on our boat. I also contemplated giving it to the locals as a thank you for their hospitality but thought it would be a too offensive description of Palawan.
In the end, I finished it while actually in Palawan, and left it at the Book Exchange in Discovery Island Resort in Coron, if you want to read it without buying it.
Tight and fun...
Palawan
C D Williams
A little under 250 pages with a nice tropical scene on the over might lead you to believe that this was a fluffy little novel about romance in the South Seas. And that is just the point of the cover, to lure you into this rip-roaring thriller with Islamic terrorists and 'Nam vets. Locals as diverse as the lush tropical jungle of the Philipines and Sin City aka Las Vegas add to a nice mixture here.
This is a great thriller that never once drags anywhere. The pace is quick, the novel is well laid out and the editing is better than most mass market paperbacks. The fact that Williams has pulled off a timely terrorist thriller with more pace and less verbiage than the mighty Tom Clancy is to be applauded.
This is a perfect novel for someone flying from the East Coast of the US to Vegas. A perfect travel novel that has enough to get you distracted but not enough to get turgid. I highly recommend this novel and feel almost intimidated that this is Williams' debut.
The novel would make a perfect movie, as long as Williams could make sure the baddies stay the same. Methinks there is a great script right below the surface. Let me assure you that it does not read like a script made into a novel.
If you are in search of a good novel to while away a few hours before you sleep at night might I suggest Palawan?
Action, Excitement, Well Written book that brought back great memories of the Philippines
This is a real treasure of a book. I am a person that has traveled extensively throughout the Philippines and it is very obvious as you read that this writer has definitely spent a lot of time there. I felt like I was right in the thick of things and it was great to see how the Philippines from some interesting expat viewpoints. When I got the book I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it was going to be more about a history of Palawan or maybe sort of a travel book. This is an awesome action story and I got so into the characters I felt I was sitting there with them.
