September 13, 2025"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe [Audiobook]"The Cask of Amontillado" is a short story by the American writer Edgar Allan Poe. The story, set in an unnamed Italian city at Carnival time, is about a man taking fatal revenge on a friend who, he believes, has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative follows a person being buried alive – in this case, by immurement. August 07, 2025Reading the Epic of Gilgamesh [Audiobook]The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic from ancient Mesopotamia. The literary history of Gilgamesh begins with five Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh (formerly read as Sumerian "Bilgames"), king of Uruk, some of which may date back to the Third Dynasty of Ur (c. 2100 BCE). These independent stories were later used as source material for a combined epic in Akkadian. The first surviving version of this combined epic, known as the "Old Babylonian" version, dates back to the 18th century BCE and is titled after its incipit, Shūtur eli sharrī ("Surpassing All Other Kings"). Only a few tablets of it have survived. The later Standard Babylonian version compiled by Sîn-lēqi-unninni dates to somewhere between the 13th to the 10th centuries BCE and bears the incipit Sha naqba īmuru ("He who Saw the Deep(s)", '"He who Sees the Unknown"'). Approximately two-thirds of this longer, twelve-tablet version have been recovered. Some of the best copies were discovered in the library ruins of the 7th-century BCE Assyrian King Ashurbanipal. *WikipediaI really enjoyed this recording, possibly one of my favourite's that I've done. I've recorded some of the Odyssey and I think I might try to record more ancient poetry. You can read the version I read here: https://content.cosmos.art/media/pages/library/the-epic-of-gilgamesh/8cc34b563d-1598904500/gilgamesh.pdfBuy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pallettownPaypal donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=CQ68PXMWB7G8Y&no_recurring=0¤cy_code=CAD...more1h 56minPlay
August 05, 2025Reading the Magna Carta [Audiobook]Magna Carta (Medieval Latin for "Great Charter"), sometimes spelled Magna Charta, is a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. First drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Stephen Langton, to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons who demanded that the King confirm the Charter of Liberties, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift and impartial justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. I wasn't surprise to read that neither side upheld their side of the charter. You can read the Magna Carta here: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/resources/magna-carta/british-library-magna-carta-1215-runnymede/Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pallettownPaypal donate: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?business=CQ68PXMWB7G8Y&no_recurring=0¤cy_code=CAD...more33minPlay

July 26, 2025"Candide: Optimism" by Voltaire [Audiobook]Candide, ou l'Optimisme is a French satire written by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment, first published in 1759. A young man, Candide, lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise, being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended, followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes Candide with, if not rejecting Leibnizian optimism outright, advocating a deeply practical precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds".
