The Sunday before Easter has been celebrated throughout the history of
Christianity as the beginning of Passion Week. It is such a vivid
contrast to the way the week ends. Jesus rides into Jerusalem as a king,
to the cheers of the crowd. We have just finished looking at the Sermon
on the Mount where Jesus describes His Kingdom. And now He arrives as
the ruler of that Kingdom. Yet, what the crowd expected that day did not
play out. Instead, Jesus embodies exactly what He has taught in the
kingdom. Jesus shows Himself as King just before He chooses to humble
Himself and lay down His life for the people of His Kingdom.
