Kun Pamela Hargan ja hänen tyttärensä Helen löydettiin kuolleina kodistaan Virginiassa Yhdysvalloissa, poliisit tiedottivat medialle nopeasti, että kyseessä oli perheen sisäinen teko. Poliisien mukaan Helen oli surmannut äitinsä ja sen jälkeen itsensä, koska oli riitaantunut äitinsä kanssa. Todellisuudessa poliisit kuitenkin tutkivat tekoa kahtena murhana ja uskoivat, että joku oli halunnut saada teon näyttämään siltä, että Helen oli surmannut äitinsä ja sen jälkeen itsensä.
