World War 1 was fought over 100 years ago, and it was the first time that the world superpowers fought against each other.  In the trenches life was hard and was miserable at times, did this stress lead soldiers to experience things that could not be explained?  There is no doubt that these paranormal stories are amazing and in multiple cases it was the only thing that saved someones life.
