This asylum is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America, and is supposedly the second largest in the world after the Kremlin in Moscow. And, even though it was built to house 250 patients, at its peak it held over 2,000 people in the same amount of space. 

As you can imagine, this caused pretty terrible, cramped conditions, and likely caused a deterioration of mental health in many of the patients. Inhumane and barbaric treatments were used to lower the number of people staying at the asylum, including electroshock therapy and icepick lobotomies. Basically, the place was designed to improve mental health but the conditions here caused so so many people to die.
