It’s parentese, not baby talk, that will boost language skills.
Not the kind of parent who says, “Are wu mommy’s widdle baby?”; well, you’re in for a nice surprise. It’s actually real words and correct grammar, presented in a higher pitch with a slower rate along with exaggerated pronunciation and inflection that helps to boost baby’s language development. You may recognize this language as “motherese”, but now, in our society, it’s “parentese” because not just moms use it. Everybody does! Speaking parentese helps baby to tune in socially and encourages responses even if it’s just babbling. Parentese has 3 features: the pitch is about an octave higher; it sounds excited and happy and the vocal contours are exaggerated meaning that the highs and higher and the lows are lower. Speaking, singing and reading to baby are great ways to enhance bonding and improve their thinking skills. Enjoy!
